  1. Shany Inc. the United States subsidiary of Shany Computers, Ltd announced
  2. the formal introduction of its AlertVIEW network management software. This
  3. series of programs is an early warning system that alerts network managers
  4. and administrators of PC-LAN failures as and when they occur.

  6. "This product is the first of its kind," said Shlomo Touboul, the president
  7. of the corporation. "There are a range of products on the market today
  8. that permit monitoring of hardware, but no one, until now, has been able
  9. to monitor the Operating Systems, Network Operating Systems and
  10. Applications along with Hardware and Wiring. This new product, developed
  11. with the assistance of IBM in Israel, interfaces directly with IBM's
  12. NetView so there is complete and seamless integration between that product
  13. and AlertVIEW.

  15. "The heart of AlertVIEW is the manager module (AVM), stated Philip Lumish,
  16. the Senior Vice President in charge of the U. S. operation. "The AlertVIEW
  17. Manager can remotely control all of the various AlertVIEW agents thereby
  18. allowing the administrator to set up alert filters, customize the
  19. company's requirements specifically, and control the different agents
  20. available."

  22. In addition to the AVM, AlertVIEW consists of the AlertVIEW Station (AVS).
  23. This is the module that is loaded as a TSR on all PC -DOS and MS-DOS
  24. workstations. AVS detects application errors, malfunctions of the
  25. operating system, NOS and any communications problems. AVS uses the IBM
  26. SNA alerts format to report and describe problems that are discovered. AVS
  27. also indicates the application name and the probable cause of the problem
  28. and a recommended action to alleviate the situation.

  30. With AlertVIEW loaded on each workstation on the LAN, it presents
  31. information including:

  33. 1- WHAT - Identification of the problem source; the name and specification
  34. of the software that generated the error.
  35.  
  36. 2- WHO - A full description of the error with problem details and
  37. recommended actions.
  38.  
  39. 3- WHERE- A description of the hierarchy path from the focal point to the
  40. station generating the problem.
  41.  
  42. 4- WHEN - When the problem occurred for a clear picture of the sequence of
  43. events leading to the alert.
  44.  
  45. 5- WHY - The probable cause of the alert with supporting detailed
  46. information.

  48. Since AlertVIEW is especially appropriate for larger networks that are
  49. connected not only to other LANs but to mainframes and mini-computers as
  50. well, it is able to span the range of primary LAN software. It has been
  51. designed to work with LAN Manager from Microsoft, LAN Server from IBM and
  52. NetWare from Novell. AlertVIEW is fully compatible with the 802.2 standard
  53. thereby permitting heterogeneous networks including bridges and gateways
  54. to be viewed all at one time by a single management station.

  56. AlertVIEW comes with its own Application Program Interface (API) that
  57. permits company staff programmers to directly connect all of their
  58. applications to this management tool. The API is an integral part of the
  59. AVS module.

  61. AlertVIEW pricing is very modest in light of its capabilities. The
  62. AlertVIEW Station modules cost $4,950 for a license for 100 PC
  63. workstations. The AlertVIEW Manager module costs $2,750. Discounts and
  64. site licenses are available when appropriate.

  66. These first products in the AlertVIEW line will shortly be followed by
  67. additional modules that cover additional functions.

  70. LAN Marketplace. For over 5 years it has been offering products such as
  71. SPOOL+ and PRINT+ to buyers of LAN Manager and LAN Server. Recently Shany
